Civics is boring, says former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. And students aren’t learning what they need to be good citizens. That’s why she has created Ourcourts.org, an interactive site for middle school teachers, students and parents. “Civics is about the rights and responsibilities of citizens, and that should be anything but boring,” she says in her introductory video.
(Quick, can you name the three branches of government?)
For students, the site is full of digital learning, including classroom games and games to play at home. For teachers, it features teaching resources, lesson plans, research links and information about the courts.
My kids aren’t old enough for these games yet, but I’d love to hear what “real” students think about these games: Do I Have a Right? and Supreme Decision. Please check them out (with your kids) and let me know.
And teachers, what do you think of the lesson plans?
