I attended the opening of Tim Hinton’s Edward Jones office in Durham last week. It was an occasion. His wife, parents and inlaws were there. His son was taken out of school for the ribbon-cutting. The local Edward Jones advisors came out to support him, as did the Chick-Fil-A -cow , members of his BNI chapter and the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce.

Although I routinely form new entities and counsel the business owners, I had forgotten the sense of both anticipation and accomplishment that accompany a business opening.

For seasoned business-owners, what advice would you give Tim, or anyone else brave enough to start out a new venture right now?

  • Taking a leaf out of Tim’s book, business owners should make sure they build a network that knows who they can help and how they can help. Perhaps having a regular event and making connections between the attendees. As the relationships grow, the referrals start to flow.
